How are people affected by Earthquakes and Volcanoes?
Our new Geography topic is helping us to understand how natural disasters happen -and how we can prepare for them. After learning about why they occur, we were tasked with a project to create a structure that might protect a Lego person from falling debris (marshmallows and spagetti) during an earthquake (vigorous shaking of jelly in a tin!). We were pleased to report that Lego man slept soundly through the entire experience! All structures protected him (although a falling boulder (marshmallow) might have damaged the outside surface on one occasion... We learnt how the design of buildings in places at risk of earthquakes was essential -as was a steady hand and good teamwork!
Trip to Butser Ancient Farm
As part of our History Topic 'What Changes did the Romans Bring?' we visited Butser Ancient Farm.
Butser is a unique farm that practices active archaeology. This means that they are always learning new facts about how early people in Britain lived.
During our visit we had the opportunity to take part in 4 workshops. We made some very dainty copper rings, we toured a Roman villa (and learnt about how Roman toilets worked!), we competed to build the strongest flint wall and finally practiced being true archaeologists discovering some amazing clues to the past in their trenches. What an interesting day- and blessed with fabulous weather.
End of term celebrations
During the spring term, we enjoyed preparing for our spring show by working hard on our acting, performance, singing and oracy skills, as well as creating our own costumes. The show, a celebration of all the learning we have been doing in English, mixed with a bit of Easter-egg themed fun, was a great success!
We also spent an exciting day celebrating the end of our Roald Dahl topic by dressing up, designing and advertising our own chocolate bars and going on a scavenger hunt around the school grounds.
DT
Our DT topic, 'levers and linkages,' was a great success. We spent several lessons exploring different mechanisms and creating our own prototypes, before designing our own working mechanism. We rounded off the topic by entertaining our friends with a show, using our Minpin-inspired moving puppets.
The author, Lucy Reynolds, visits Y3 and Y4
This term, Lucy Reynolds spent some time with our children sharing her new book, The Thousand Year Tree. The book was produced as part of a project working with a local school and The Surrey Hills Society.
Lucy shared information not just about the themes within her book, but also about how she gathers her ideas. The children also asked her questions about how she became an author.
History
During this spring term, the children are exploring "Would I survive the Stone Age?"
We began the term with a visit from Portals to the Past who delivered lots of information on how Stone Age people would have used tools to help them to gather food, make clothing, and stay safe. We have also made good use of the Godalming Museum Loan box of Stone Age artefacts to use as evidence for what materials were available to them. We are developing into very knowledgeable archaeologists!

In the event of school closure
On rare occasions, it may be necessary to close the school. This may be due to adverse weather conditions or perhaps when essential school services cannot be provided –e.g. heating, plumbing or water.
Please refer to the School’s Bad Weather Policy on our website for information regarding how we communicate a school closure.
Class teachers will then initiate home school learning activities, and these will be available to children by 10am of the same morning.
